Ensuring a Safe & Welcoming Learning Environment
The purpose of Dutch JavaScript Conference (DJS Conf) is to learn and connect with fellow engineers. We are committed to ensuring that everyone can participate in an environment that is both welcoming and safe.
Our Code of Conduct governs the handling of all reports of misconduct at or around a DJS Conf event. In addition, this Safety Policy covers situations where we learn of serious misconduct by a participant—even if it occurred in the past or outside the conference—or when someone's presence or participation is likely to materially disrupt the event.
Priority One: We want all attendees to be safe and feel safe.
We will impose restrictions when necessary to eliminate foreseeable risks of physical or psychological harm to attendees.
When deciding whether to restrict an individual with past or outside serious misconduct—or whose presence or participation is likely to materially disrupt the conference—we consider:
- Direct safety risk: Would their presence create a foreseeable risk to attendees? If yes, the individual may not participate.
- Perceived safety / disruption: If no direct risk exists, would their presence make attendees feel unsafe or materially disrupt the conference? If so, we may apply lesser restrictions based on:
- Is the person in a position of authority at DJS Conf?
- Do they have prior Code of Conduct violations here?
- Are there events that could increase the risk of re-offense?
- Was there a pattern of misconduct?
- How recent was the offense?
Priority Two: Supporting Restorative Justice
If participation by an individual does not increase risk to others—or is no longer likely to disrupt the event—we support them engaging with our community in positive, constructive ways.
We consider questions such as:
- What was the outcome of any good-faith dialogue with the individual?
- Have they maintained a clean record for a reasonable period and avoided major controversy?
- Are they fully abiding by the DJS Conf Code of Conduct?
- If a crime was involved, has the individual fully completed all criminal penalties, including probation?
Note: More stringent requirements apply to anyone holding a conference organizational or speaking role.
